Gethrsgethrs

Sound familiar?

«I'm afraid of getting locked in: my notes are being held hostage.»

Every notes app promises your data is yours, and then the export is a format only it can open, or is missing altogether. Getting in is easy; getting out, when you need to, is not. You want to choose to stay, not be forced to.

What happens today

  • Export produces a format only that app can read, or one PDF per note.
  • Attachments stay behind: you leave with the text and without the files.
  • It is unclear who can see your notes, and a sensitive note sits next to the shopping list.
  • Closing the account is a procedure, and you never know if the data is really gone.

How gethrs solves it

01

Export everything, in a readable file

“Export everything” downloads a zip with notes, attachments and structure. Notes are block text, readable without this app: the promise to make to anyone who has switched once already. The same file restores from scratch, here or elsewhere.

02

Private by definition

No page of the app is public: outside here there is nothing to index. Whoever sees a note of yours is only whoever you invited. Usage statistics count actions, never text.

03

A password on sensitive notes

A note or a notebook locked with a read password opens only with it, even when the account is open. The password is stored as a hash, never in clear.

04

The account deletes itself, with everything

From Settings → Account: notes, attachments, tasks, shares and the user itself. Before that, if you want, export everything.

In practice

  1. From the account menu choose “Export everything” and open the zip: notes are readable in any editor.
  2. Put a read password on a note that matters: lock it and open it again.
  3. When you want to leave, Settings → Account → Delete. No need to write to anyone.

Questions

What format do notes come out in?
Block text, a subset of markdown: headings, lists, checklists, tables, links. It opens in any editor and reads without this app.
Can the backup be put back in?
Yes: the same file restores from scratch, with notes, attachments, notebooks and spaces. It also moves everything to another account.
Where is the data?
Database in the European Union, attachments on dedicated storage, sign-in handled by an authentication provider. Who processes what is written in the privacy policy, name by name.

A notebook. Some notes.
